This week began with the sad but not unexpected news of the passing of the acclaimed poet, novelist, essayist, farmer and teacher, Wendell Berry. Wendell was deep and challenging thinker and writer, uncompromising in his beliefs and values, cranky, funny – his laugh would light up a room – generous with his thoughts (he wrote 50 books), incredibly prescient and prophetic. He was an exceptional man and person. In the fall of 2000, I had the great privilege of spending a week with him at Schumacher College in Devon, UK made possible because of an environmental award I had received for work I had been doing as a student to save and re-establish the UBC Farm. The week with Wendell was a seminal experience for me as a young man and sustainable farming advocate.
